Future of Money
Elon Musk: Will Money Become Irrelevant in the Future?
Elon Musk has repeatedly suggested that in a world of AI and robots, work will be optional, and money might lose its significance. What exactly did he say, and what does it mean for businesses today?
Elon Musk has, in recent years, reiterated an idea that sparks much debate: when artificial intelligence and robots can perform almost any job, work will become a choice, not a necessity—and perhaps money, as we know it, will also lose its importance.
What Exactly Was Said?
In a conversation with then-UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in November 2023, Musk stated that a point would be reached where no job would be mandatory, and people would only work if they desired. On later occasions, he spoke of a future of "abundance," where products and services would be so inexpensive that money would become less relevant. His timelines vary—and Musk is known for very optimistic forecasts regarding timing.
Why Not Everyone Agrees
Many economists point out that previous revolutions also promised abundance but, in practice, created new professions and new disparities. The question of who controls AI systems and who benefits from their profits remains entirely open.
What This Means for Business Owners Today
You don't need to wait for Musk's future to feel the shift. Already today, the cost of performing a task with AI is significantly lower than the cost of an employee doing the same. A business that adopts this now reduces costs, while a business that delays will pay more than its competitors.
Whether money loses its value in a few years or not—your time right now is worth more than anything else.
